Earth Day: How the world's largest environmental movement was born Fifty years ago, 20 million Americans gathered to celebrate Earth Day. This was an event that affected environmental legislation for years to come. O n January 28, 1969, an explosion at a Union Oil platform spilled 100,000 barrels of crude oil on the Santa Barbara Channel and along the coast. At the time, it was the largest oil spill in American waters and the largest oil spill off the coast of California. Gladstone Hill, the New York Times' environmental correspondent, called it an "environmental" shot heard all over the world. L ater in the summer, Wisconsin Senator and environmentalist Gillard Nelson visited the site and witnessed the devastation himself. He decided to do something else.
